How do you stay healthy in the winter?
It’s cold outside, maybe a bit humid, depending on where you live. It’s getting dark earlier. We are spending more time inside. Winter months are harsh on our health, our skin, and our mood.
Effect of winter on our health:
• Risk of influenza or other seasonal diseases
• Irritated skin
• Dry skin due to dry heating air
• Joint stiffness
The harsh cold can influence your skin. It can start itching and be irritated. Often the seasonal change can cause breakouts. For people with eczema, rosacea, and other skin conditions, the winter months can be tough on the skin.
Winter also affects our emotional state. We are outside less and do fewer physical activities. We see people less, and it gets dark early and stays dark late. These can provoke a feeling of loneliness.
Some tips to stay healthy through winter:
1) Ventilate regularly, meaning open the windows at least once a day for 10 minutes to let fresh air in.
2) Try to go out for a 30-minute walk at least twice a week.
3) Adapt an indoor workout routine; plenty of free apps can help you set up a routine and provide you with varying workouts with no equipment needed.
4) Eat healthy, including fresh seasonal veggies and fruit. And add some citrus fruit once a week; they give you an extra dose of Vitamin C.
5) Stay hydrated! Dry heating air dries out your airways and your skin. It really dries out your skin. Aim for 1.5L of water every day.
6) Moisturize your skin regularly and maybe even think about adjusting your skin routine if needed, for example, choose an extra hydrating moisturizer in winter.
